As you are aware the General Assembly of Church of Scotland will sit Saturday
20th May – Friday 26th May. For the first time
in many years this Assembly will witness debates that strike at the very
heart of our faith, not least concerning the “marking” of civil
partnerships with a religious ceremony and the proposal to support research
on human embryos.
In
the past, evangelicals would have only got wind of such proposals through
the arrival of the Blue Book (the reports of the Councils and proposed
deliverances) or through word of mouth. Because of Forward Together
evangelicals are able, this year, to contribute to these debates in a way
that is planned and organised.

Text alerts
Make sure you never miss that all-important debate again with
a brand
new text alert service for UK mobile phone users. All you have to do is text
the words: ASSEMBLY ALERT to 80806 each day to receive advance notice (up to
10 minutes) of each main debate, giving you plenty of time to log on and
watch or listen live. Your text to us will cost your normal texting charge
from your mobile phone network. You will receive a confirmation message from
the Kirk's web team. They will then charge your mobile phone 50p which covers the cost of
them sending you text messages throughout the day. You must send them a text for
each day that you wish to receive updates.
Podcasting
Another development this year is the introduction of Assembly
highlights available as podcasts which can be downloaded to your MP3 player,
iPod or desktop. This free podcasting service, via the iTunes Music Store (download iTunes from Apple's website for free),
also gives you the option to automatically receive the latest updates from
the channels you subscribe to, such as the General Assembly, keeping you
constantly updated.
